[Remote] Principal Sensor Systems & 3D Simulation Engineer
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. 4MP Inc is building a new technological foundation for precision manufacturing, enabling CNC machines to self-measure and self-correct. They are seeking a Principal Sensor Systems & 3D Simulation Engineer to develop simulation models and error-mapping foundations that enhance measurement and correction technology in manufacturing systems.
Responsibilities
- Build simulation models for 3D sensing and measurement systems, including optical/laser/structured-light behavior, sensor response, imaging geometry, surface interaction, calibration, and measurement uncertainty
- Translate physical sensing devices and full measurement systems into mathematical and computational models using first-principles reasoning and practical engineering judgment
- Model how sensors interact with surfaces
- Simulate source/optics/detector behavior as part of the full system
- Develop numerical models, 3D data pipelines, parameter studies, and virtual experiments that support real engineering decisions
- Analyze point clouds, meshes, surfaces, CAD geometry, measurement results, and machine/sensor data to understand 3D deviation patterns
- Create 3D error maps, deviation maps, uncertainty maps, and correction-oriented representations that connect measured part behavior to machine, toolpath, fixture, sensor, and process behavior
- Compare simulation outputs against real sensor data, machine data, metrology data, and controlled experiments
- Design structured experiments that validate sensor-system, 3D reconstruction, and error-mapping models and improve predictive accuracy
- Build hybrid approaches that combine sensor physics, 3D analytics, data-driven models, and machine learning
- Support synthetic data generation, virtual metrology, digital twin development, measurement strategy optimization, and correction-logic validation
- Work closely with software, AI, machining, metrology, sensor, and systems teams to make 3D measurement and simulation useful in the real product
- Communicate technical findings clearly and help the team understand what the system is seeing, where the error comes from, and how it should be corrected
Skills
- 5+ years of experience in sensor systems, 3D sensing, optical engineering, applied physics, machine vision, robotics perception, computational geometry, metrology, simulation engineering, or a related technical field
- Strong background in sensor modeling, 3D data processing, geometric modeling, numerical methods, and computational engineering
- Experience building models of real devices, measurement systems, or 3D data pipelines from first principles and experimental data
- Strong programming skills in Python
- Experience with scientific computing, numerical methods, optimization, parameter studies, uncertainty modeling, or simulation frameworks
- Ability to model sensor and measurement systems such as lasers, structured light, cameras, lenses, detectors, illumination, surface interaction, imaging geometry, calibration, machine motion, coordinate transforms, and noise
- Experience working with point clouds, meshes, CAD surfaces, 3D reconstruction, registration, surface comparison, or deviation analysis
- Experience comparing model predictions to real-world sensor, metrology, machine, experimental, or metrology data
- Strong understanding of calibration, uncertainty, measurement noise, sensitivity analysis, error propagation, and experimental design
- Ability to work across software, hardware, data, sensors, geometry, optics, and physical systems
- Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex technical work clearly
- Master's or PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Vision, Computational Geometry, Metrology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Experience with lasers, structured light, triangulation, photogrammetry, computational imaging, machine vision, 3D sensing, depth sensing, or industrial optical metrology
- Experience with point-cloud processing, mesh processing, 3D registration, surface deviation analysis, feature extraction, pose estimation, or coordinate-system alignment
- Experience with 3D error mapping, geometric error propagation, tolerance analysis, metrology-driven correction, or machine/part deviation modeling
- Experience with camera calibration, projector calibration, hand-eye calibration, machine-to-sensor calibration, coordinate transformations, and 3D reconstruction
- Experience generating synthetic sensor data or building virtual environments for perception, inspection, robotics, metrology, or correction systems
- Experience modeling measurement error propagation, tolerances, geometric uncertainty, surface reflectance, occlusion, sensor placement, measurement strategy, or correction tradeoffs
- Experience working in advanced R&D, startup, aerospace, manufacturing, robotics, optics, semiconductor, or hard-tech environments
