[Remote] Forensic Mechanical Engineer

Industrial Loss Consultants Inc. is a consulting firm headquartered in Chicago’s Northwest Suburbs, seeking a Forensic Mechanical Engineer. The role involves performing root cause analysis on equipment and machinery failures, providing solutions to repair and return damaged equipment to pre-loss condition, and requires travel for on-site inspections nationwide.
Responsibilities
- Perform root cause analysis on equipment and machinery failures
- Provide solutions to repair and return damaged equipment and machinery to pre-loss condition
- Consult on equipment or machinery that has been damaged due to fire, smoke, water, equipment malfunction, or other
- Assess and determine the extent of damage and root cause of failure from a mechanical standpoint
- Prepare reports with minimal oversight
- Provide direction and project management of necessary repairs to equipment and machinery
- Identify the root cause and extent of damage to machinery and equipment after a loss or failure event has occurred
- Demonstrate strong leadership abilities and guide teams
- Quantify or estimate repair or replacement costs and conduct supporting research
- Compose accurate, concise, understandable reports summarizing observations and explaining conclusions
- Travel to perform on-site inspections of machinery and equipment that have experienced a loss
Skills
- Must hold a Professional Engineering (PE) license in the candidate's resident state
- Strong foundational knowledge of mechanical engineering principles with knowledge of systems, including but not limited to production lines, compressors, motors, gearing, conveyors, and other mechanical components
- The ability to identify the root cause and extent of damage to machinery and equipment after a loss or failure event has occurred, particularly from a mechanical engineering standpoint
- The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong leadership abilities, with a proven ability to guide teams, coordinate multidisciplinary efforts, and deliver results under tight deadlines
- Must possess exceptional writing skills to coherently articulate technical situations to a layperson audience, blending expert opinion and factual analysis in a structured and accessible manner
- Able to quantify or estimate repair or replacement costs and conduct supporting research
- The ability to present solutions to repair and return the damaged machinery or equipment to pre-loss condition is required
- Ability to navigate a loss site and climb onto equipment, ladders, catwalks, and other locations where the machinery is located is required
- The ability to compose accurate, concise, understandable reports summarizing observations and explaining conclusions is required
- Travel is required and varies depending on the assignment
- A minimum of five (5) years of prior forensic experience as a mechanical engineer is required
- Excellent time management skills are required
- Ability to work alone with little supervision and to provide timely communication and reports to the ILC customer and ILC Management is required
- Exceptional verbal, written, and organizational skills are required
- Strong computer skills, including organization, file management and knowledge of all Microsoft products, including Outlook, Excel, and Word, are required
- Exceptional attention to detail and maintaining the confidentiality of all information provided is required
- Holding a PE license in multiple states is preferred
- Most qualified candidates preferred locations – Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, or Pennsylvania
- Most qualified candidate will live within 45 minutes of a major airport
- Basic knowledge of electronics (e.g., PLC, Switchgears, Transformers) is preferred but not required
- Knowledge of validating repair costs is preferred but is not required
