Staff Accountant
Barnes & Noble Education, Inc. is dedicated to improving education accessibility and achievement. They are seeking a Staff Accountant to support accurate financial reporting and assist in the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, review and record monthly journal entries with supporting schedules and documentation in accordance with GAAP and company policies to ensure accurate financial reporting
- Record accruals, prepaid expenses, and related amortization entries for accurate period-end accounting
- Perform reconciliations and variance analysis for assigned general ledger accounts, including balance sheet and income statement accounts
- Participate in and supports monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
- Assist in the preparation and analysis of internal financial statements and related reporting deliverables
- Support lease accounting activities, including preparation, maintenance, and reconciliation of related schedules to ensure ongoing compliance with applicable standards
- Ensure adherence to internal controls and accounting policies through accurate documentation and reconciliation practices
- Identify and support process improvement and automation initiatives to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and reporting capabilities
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to research, resolve, and prevent accounting discrepancies
- Exercises sound professional judgment and discretion in the performance of accounting responsibilities and problem resolution
- Additional responsibilities as required
Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required
- 1-3 years of general ledger accounting or public accounting experience
- Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and variance analysis within a financial reporting environment
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, and related functions)
- High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities focused on financial accuracy and integrity
- Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain accounting issues and variances
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple deliverables in a deadline-driven, fast-paced close environment
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while effectively collaborating across teams
- Strong discipline around documentation, accuracy, and adherence to accounting policies and controls
- Experience with ERP systems preferred (PeopleSoft a plus)
