Veteran Career Planner

About the position Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) is seeking a Veteran Career Planner to join our team at the Iowa WORKS office in Davenport, Iowa. This role involves assisting veterans with their employment and training goals by establishing rapport, completing assessments of their skills and background, and identifying career goals and objectives. The position is full-time, Monday through Friday, 800 AM – 430 PM, with hybrid telework and alternate schedules available after six months of employment. The successful candidate will support veterans with employment barriers by interviewing applicants, connecting them with job opportunities, and coordinating with veteran employment teams. The role also involves monitoring veteran service performance, preparing reports, tracking outcomes, and providing regular updates to leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Provide and document individualized career services to veterans and other eligible populations as part of an integrated office team.
  • Conduct comprehensive and specialized assessments of skill levels and service needs.
  • Develop individualized employment plans outlining career goals, achievement objectives, and appropriate support services.
  • Provide group and individual counseling.
  • Offer career planning services.
  • Conduct short-term pre-vocational training focused on communication, interviewing, punctuality, professional conduct, and other workplace readiness skills.
  • Develop and maintain documented action plans and timely case notes for veterans receiving services.
  • Deliver and coordinate employment and training services for veterans and other eligible individuals with qualifying employment barriers.
  • Maintain an active caseload of approximately 40 eligible participants and conduct ongoing follow-up and job development activities.
  • Support successful employment outcomes, including weekly contact with all service-managed veterans.
  • Conduct outreach activities and build relationships with organizations such as Veteran Service Organizations, CBOCs, Vet Centers, Department of Corrections, homeless shelters, ESGR, WIOA partners, and civic and service organizations.
  • Conduct workshops, including resume writing, mock interviews, and other employment readiness sessions.
  • Interview new veteran applicants with qualifying employment barriers for services.
  • Coordinate with Business Engagement Teams and Local Veterans Employment Representatives.
  • Match veterans and eligible individuals with job opportunities and labor exchange services.
  • Support job placement efforts for veterans and eligible participants.
  • Analyze priority services provided to veterans on a regular basis.
  • Prepare and submit monthly activity reports to management.
  • Monitor Veterans Performance Standards and track achievement of goals.
  • Help guide and improve veteran service efforts and outcomes.
  • Submit required reports, success stories, and follow-up documentation on time.
  • Provide weekly updates and reports to leadership as requested.
  • Participate in all Office of Veteran Workforce Services meetings and ensure that success stories are shared with the team and local leadership.
  • Include information on participation in marketing efforts, job fairs and other events to create content and success stories for newsletters and other Iowa WORKS for Veteran social media communication.
  • Advise local office staff in providing non-QEB veterans and people with timely and appropriate labor exchange services.
  • Advise local staff to facilitate the delivery of appropriate services to veterans, periodically analyze priority services to veterans, and monitor job orders received from FCJL employers to ensure veteran preference.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field.
  • Four years of full-time work experience in career services, teaching or training to improve skills, job coaching, providing human services to individuals in need, sales, customer service, call center operations, or human-resources-related services involving interviewing, reviewing job applications, conducting employment-related assessments, or job placement.
  • A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described above), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twelve months of full-time work as a Workforce Associate.
  • A person who served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable. Nice-to-haves
